What is gravel running?

Gravel running is an hybrid concept that combines road running and trail running. A few years ago, Salomon’s engineers realised that modern urban runners don’t just run on one type of surface, but that in a single training session or social run they might run on tarmac, grass, a park, stones… This led to the creation of the GRAVEL concept and a type of footwear such as the AERO GLIDE GRVL 4 designed to adapt to all these surfaces, with suitable cushioning for asphalt but with improved durability and a flat sole that performs well on less technical trails.

Road running makes us think of navigating the urban environment, stepping on the asphalt, crossing crowded streets and dodging the pavements of the ‘concrete jungle’, step by step. Trail running, on the other hand, takes you off the beaten track, through rugged terrain, rocky trails, dense forests and steep mountain ridges. But what about races that combine both worlds? The ones where you run several kilometres on asphalt before venturing into the dusty paths of your local park?

This is what the Salomon Run Barcelona is like, a varied and fun route that allows you to experience gravel running at its best.

Where can you experience gravel running in Barcelona?

The Carretera de les Aigües in Barcelona is a very popular location for running and a hub for gravel running, offering spectacular views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea along the route. Here are two ideal routes for trying out this hybrid concept:

Route 1: Carretera de les Aigües form Pla dels Maduixers.

Route 2: Carretera de les Aigües from Forat del Vent

Both routes are mostly flat—route 1 more than route 2—and unpaved, making them comfortable for running long distances. The combination of spectacular views and accessible terrain makes Carretera de les Aigües the perfect place to enjoy a good run outdoors.

Along the route:

Mirablau: A place with a great gastronomic offer and the best views of Barcelona (route 1).

Asador Casa Juaco: A legendary restaurant on Carretera de les Aigües where you can sample a wide variety of meats.
